Award for the Lyngdorf MXA-8400 amplifier

The German Lite Magazine has published the first FR-2 review, and reviewer Volker Frech is delighted:

“That’s what living room friendliness means: Instead of occupying lots of rooms space, the Lyngdorf FR-2 stand flat and perfectly shaped directly at the wall – and thanks to the Boundary Woofer principle, that’s where they deliver the full performance with a powerful yet precise bass.

“The Lyngdorf approach is the following: The wall is your friend. The speaker takes advantage of the room acoustics instead of working against it. With normal speakers, a position close to the wall leads to unwanted bass exaggerations. Even the placement with some distance to the wall leads to unwanted bass effects.”

“H Gang by Donald Fagen starts with an ultra-deep bass note by Freddy Washington – and the FR-2 delivers it just as it should: powerful, voluminous, room-flooding – and with a force that we can physically feel. Despite all the power, this bass is very defined: We can hear everything that happens in the bass. It starts with the bass drum, which drummer Keith Carlock kicks with verve, giving it a nice punch. Nevertheless, it remains dry and contoured and is also clearly set off from Washington’s low-frequency tunes. Great! Furthermore, the bass remains very consistent when we move away from the listening position in the room. This is a positive consequence of the bass radiation without overlapping rear wall reflections.”

“Even the depth image is good. We can hear it in the Fagen recording, but even better in a concert hall recording. With Lo Vi Rivedo Alfin from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Maria Stuarda the FR-2 presents the size of the concert hall very well and allows the orchestra a spacious stage. This good three-dimensional imaging also shows when Joyce DiDonato comes in, standing in front of the orchestra and followed by the chorus playing from behind.”

“Summary:  The Lyngdorf FR-2 offers a class combination of living room friendliness and sound quality: It scores with great dynamic capability and headroom and offers a great wealth of detail thanks to its transparency and amount of details. At the same time, it achieves a good three-dimensional reproduction with a three-dimensional, physical representation of voices and instruments. The bass is downright astonishing: thanks to Lyngdorf’s “Boundary Woofer principle”, the slim FR-2 delivers a surprisingly powerful and deep foundation from the woofers as close to the wall as possible. The highlight: this bass doesn’t become boomy, but is extremely defined and precise.”
